I am currently Professor of Interaction Design in the School of Design + Architecture at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne.
Prior to that I was Associate Professor in the Human Centred Computing group at Aalborg University, Denmark, from 2011-2016. I worked for CSIRO Sydney as Lead Interaction Designer, Senior Scientist, on the HxI project in 2009-10. I was awarded a PhD in “Indexing to Situated Interactions” from The University of Melbourne in 2006. This was a cross-disciplinary study between HCI and Architecture with supervisors Professor Steve Howard and Professor Bharat Dave. Prior to this I was a lecturer at The University of Tasmania for over ten years, introducing HCI, as a course, to Tasmania.
With a transdisciplinary background spanning architecture, computer science, and Human-Computer Interaction I have published primarily in Human Centred Computing and Interaction Design, with a recent focus on Design Studies and Smart Cities/Smart Homes research. My fields of special interest include: Design Methods; Interaction Design for Mobiles and Pervasive Computing; Interaction design for Augmented and Virtual Reality; Digital Health; Interaction Design for Smart Homes and Smart Spaces; Design for Future Workspaces and Workplaces; and User Experience Design for AI, Assistive Technologies and Virtual Learning Environments.
My leadership roles at Swinburne include:
My research is within the overall themes of:
Understanding Human-AI interaction in the context of decision making and team collaboration
The interaction design of virtual reality for workplace training, streetscape evaluation and experiencing past design innovations
Understanding and designing interactive digital technologies for future living at work, home and play.
Augmenting the physical world with a digital layer, to enhance people's experience of place and the built environment
